The paper explores the role of libraries, in particular of digital libraries, in the context of the digital transformation of the Public Administration (PA). Firstly, policies, strategies, services and infrastructures are reviewed both in the European and Italian framework, then some critical issues of this transformation in our Country are discussed. Finally the relationships between digital transformation plans and libraries are investigated, identifying the main contributions given by libraries and librarians to the process, examining its impact on the digital services they offer and highlighting some shortcomings that could be avoided by improving existing realities. These three reference axes deserve an adequate, urgent and serious investigation by the main institutional stakeholders and the Italian Library Association (AIB), since they can activate initatives aimed at fostering the growth of digital skills, strengthening existing services and developing new ones. These objectives require the commitment of professionals with a potential positive effect on the labour market and the opportunity to activate synergies between the private and public sector.Downloads
