Since inter-library loan is mainly structured at a local level in Italy, libraries often encounter difficulties in producing a cooperative effort to meet their users’needs in a national and international context. With the digital transition Italy is now undergoing, the creation of a user-friendly national inter-library loan and document delivery service is at hand, through the adoption of interoperability standards and open formats, that overcome the differences arising from the adoption of different library software applications and enhance data sharing capabilities. The ICCU, with its ILL SBN digital platform, aims at creating the necessary conditions to integrate national inter-library services, by fostering the widest possible cooperation among different institutions. The team dedicated to interoperability and the development of the ILL SBN service, that recently concluded its activities, gave an important contribution to the achievement of these goals, thanks to the strong cooperation between librarians using different software applications and working together for an integrated service.
