This article describes how since when the proposal of the French President Jacques Chirac of a foundation which could bring forward the values of the European Union in the digital realm was born, EU-funded Europeana has been encouraging the use and reuse of data for a digital cultural heritage that is genuinely shared, open and free from any constraint.
