A website for promoting monastic and convent sites: the P.A.N.E.M. project

Communication, through its multimedia characteristics, now plays an important role in cultural dissemination. New technologies allow us to observe, consult and preserve cultural heritage, represented in its current state or in its diachronic evolution, transcending its physicality. This is made possible by open and shared databases, accessible via personal computers, smartphones, video installations, etc. In line with this communicative approach, P.A.N.E.M., an acronym for Pottery, Architecture, Narrations, Environment of Monasteries, is a multidisciplinary project focused on the analysis of the refectory and its evolution over the centuries. The refectorium, one of the main spaces where the life of monastic and convent communities took place, is analysed taking into consideration three dimensions: the physical (structures, spaces, furnishings, utensils, etc.), the ideal (symbolic and cultural values) and the social (space for gathering and sharing), with particular interest in sites in inland Campania. The scientific results are communicated not only in traditional publications but also through a dedicated website, https://www.paneminrefectorio.it/, whose main purpose is to make accessible, promote and protect the artistic, architectural and archaeological heritage relevant to the history of the monastic and conventual communities of Campania, especially those that are minor and little known.
