Towards the Creation of a National Digital Ecosystem for Culture
The article explores the vision and objectives of the National Digital Ecosystem for Culture, an ambitious project developed within the framework of Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) to transform the country’s cultural heritage through digital innovation. At the heart of this initiative lies a technological infrastructure that interconnects institutions and systems, creating a dynamic and interactive environment designed to enhance cultural heritage as a public resource. The ecosystem redefines the value chain, fostering access, preservation, and reuse of cultural data through a multi-level governance model that incorporates innovative tools such as artificial intelligence and co-creation platforms.
Conceived to address structural challenges such as the digital divide and the fragmentation of digitization projects, the model is structured around four interconnected digital environments: the platform for digitization (D.PaC), the infrastructure for data management (I.PaC), the laboratory for data-driven product development (DPaaS), and the portal for public access and co-creation. Through this approach, the ecosystem not only increases the cultural sector’s competitiveness but also expands heritage accessibility to diverse audiences, encouraging active participation and stimulating the cultural market. The article provides a strategic and operational perspective on how cultural heritage can evolve into an integrated, innovative, and sustainable ecosystem, positioning itself as a key driver for the country’s social and economic development.
