The Treatment of Collections, Owners, and Provenance in the SBN Index
As part of project Indice 3 relating to the re-engineering and evolution of the National Library Service (SBN) Index, the Central Institute for the Union Catalogue of Italian Libraries (ICCU) has provided for the possibility of centrally managing the collections of names/entities present in SBN libraries, which until now have only been managed at a local level. Specifically, the Institute is developing the Fondi-Possessori-Esemplari (Collections-Owners-Copies) project, which links these elements together. The centralisation in the SBN Index of information relating to copies, collections, provenance/owners and mutual links will enable shared management with all SBN libraries through an expansion of the current structure. To date, each SBN hub that processes this type of data does so completely independently, generating a proliferation of dissimilar systems and offering its users a very diverse and partial search option. With this new project, which is important not only for the SBN community, users will have a single point of access for integrated searches on collections, owners and copies.
