New Competencies for Artificial Intelligence (AI): A Comparative Analysis of Competency Frameworks and the Role of the Librarian as Facilitator

The paper analyzes and compares the main Artificial Intelligence (AI) competence frameworks – including DigComp, OECD AILit, UNESCO, and those specific to the library sector like IFLA, ARL, and ACRL – to outline the new skills required for the “facilitator librarian” in the era of digital transformation. The article highlights that the librarian’s role evolves from heritage custodian to critical mediator, focusing on three key areas: promotion of AI Literacy, mediation of information reliability (including the fight against deep fakes), and participation in the ethical governance of AI. The comparative analysis reveals a structural competence gap, particularly in the advanced areas of data governance and the operational translation of ethical principles into concrete professional practices, underscoring the need to integrate general educational models with specific professional approaches to reinforce the role of libraries as civic infrastructures of knowledge and trust.
