Abstract

MOOCs – Massive Open Online Courses – are online courses born under the house of OERs – Open Educational Resources – and characterized by large number of participants from diverse nationalities, education, cultural background. Born within the US academic context on the aftermath of e-learning and the digital revolution, from the early beginnings to their launch, from the first enthusiasms to the following challenges, their growth saw different models and participatory approaches and a variety of platforms. They were offered by many institutions, from large universities to institutes for research and education. Nowadays they are still provided in large number, and they offer a precious opportunity for personal and professional development in a society which is becoming increasingly aware of the need for lifelong learning.
